PIRELLI HangarBicocca

An immense and impressive place due to its dimension dedicated to art

A place for contemporary art that I find incredibly surprising and stimulating in Milan is HangarBicocca of Pirelli. Andrea, I would like you to tell us today what this incredible project is about.
We will my friend. Let’s start by saying it is located close to the Bicocca University of Milan and I can assure you that when you are there, you will feel satisfied and happy...
First things first, what is Pirelli HangarBicocca?
HangarBicocca is a foundation promoted by the Pirelli company and the Government of Lombardi which established its offices in an old factory where locomotives were built and like the Prada Foundation, is another excellent example of industrial archeology and the conversion to a place of production and promotion of contemporary art.
I’ve been told that it is a huge exhibition space ...
That’s right, it is a huge and impressive place because of it’s dimensions with a total area of 15,000 square meters of exhibition being one of the largest showrooms across Europe regularly organizing interesting and important solo exhibitions of internationally renowned artists who create their works with a close relationship with these large areas.
Andrea, tell me what is the most important work that we will find in Hangarbicocca?
HangarBicocca hosts a permanent exhibition of one of my favorite artists of the twentieth century, the German artist Anselm Kiefer. I can say that I have rarely appreciated such a perfect harmony between the exhibition and the exposition space and certainly the Seven Heavenly Palaces of Kiefer, seven huge towers of reinforced concrete, is the most important piece, whose greatness takes your breath away while you walk through the middle of the structure and thanks to the space where it is located the piece is potentiated causing a strong and intense reaction that only an extraordinary and brilliant artist as Kiefer could achieve through their work.
And finally, it is true that this foundation is non-profit?
That’s right, having completely free access to the space and exhibitions. In addition, I must say that the staff is very well prepared. I can assure you Andres, that the conversation I had with one of the girls from the staff not only about Kiefer but on other artistic subjects was intellectually rewarding and challenging.
In conclusion, I can say that the unusual space of HangarBicocca is absolutely a must see in Milan if you like contemporary art and industrial archeology.
Andrea and what better way to end this visit than by enjoying a wonderful dish and good wine at the renowned restaurant Dopolavoro Bicocca which is part of this complex, so cheers and buon appetito!
