Ljubljana
A small Slav pearl in the center of Europe
The 2016 Green Capital of Europe for its excellent environmental standards, this former Roman military camp is now a vibrant city that stands out not only for its environmentally-friendly nature, but for the many surprises it unveils on the visitor.

Andrea, where is this gem?

Ljubljana, which is the capital of Slovenia, a small country in Central Europe that can be crossed by car in just a few hours and borders with Italy on the west, with Austria on the north, Hungary to the east and Croatia to the South. Driving across the country you'll find some places that seem right out of an enchanted fairy tale, with its dense and lush forests, green meadows, small churches and castles scattered everywhere.
Tell me more about Ljubljana.

Ljubljana is a gem of architecture of Central Europe and beyond. Crossed by the river Ljubljanica, the city is characterized by baroque architecture and Art Nouveau hotels, where you can feel the strong Austrian influence. The city is splendid and extremely clean; it has been completely renovated in recent years and, as I said, the Ljubljanica river runs through it, which influences the urban landscape, lined with very well maintained buildings and restaurants.
What is for you Ljubljana?
While Ljubljana is not a European metropolis like Rome, Paris or London and it doesn’t have world-class museums and majestic monuments, it does have a unique, suggestive and undeniably romantic atmosphere, so you can spend at least two very special days here, exploring it step by step. It is also a very fun place, and offers a rich nightlife with bars, concerts in public spaces and street performers in every corner.

Is the river part of the city’s life?

Totally, the Ljubljanica is a central hub in the development of the city. A very interesting aspect of the river are the countless ancient and modern glass and steel bridges: the most famous is the "Triple Bridge" of Joze Plecnik, a very active architect in the first half of the century with his very personal Art Nouveau style, which has influenced many areas and re-designed specific corners of the capital of Slovenia.
Ljubljana is topped by a fortress visible from every part of the city: how do I get there?
The castle has been is completely renovated and offers a spectacular view of the city! The best way to get there is by the new glass funicular, from which you can see the city rising slowly. I recommend you go there at sunset, when you can enjoy a special light show which creates a magical atmosphere throughout the city.
